Interesting Comparison between New Jersey and the OBX

When I first put forth my thoughts against off shore drilling along the Outer Banks, drill baby drill, was the chant. Everyone being affected by gas prices above $3 and in some cases $4, were clamoring for increased off shore drilling. Since prices have fallen we see places like New Jersey embracing Green technology. This is not surprising considering New Jersey’s stance against off shore drilling.

Some ideas in New Jersey are proposed and some are under way. The Atlantic City wind and wave farm is merely in the planning phase but towns like Stone Harbor are currently looking to install solar power on municipal buildings. Both ideas bode well for the use of renewable energy.

Well the weekend is almost upon us. The OBX Marathon is under 10 days away. Are you ready? The OBX Marathon is fast becoming one of the biggest destination weekends of the year. Tens of thousands of people will be on the Outer Banks to participate and spectate. This is a great weekend to stop in and enjoy one of the OBX’s famous restaurants.

Oil Rigs offshore of Outer Banks

Yesterday the House voted to allow drililng offshore of the Outer Banks. I am sure this will be a long time coming decision. It sounds as if the states will get to vote on whether or not they will allow drilling off their coasts. That has to be the only good sign to come out of yesterday’s vote. It is unknown what the long term effects of this vote will be.

Outer Banks Marathon

Quickly becoming one of the biggest off season draws to the Outer Banks is the OBX Marathon. The marathon held on Veterans Day Weekend was established 3 years ago. The marathon is a fund raiser for the Outer Banks Relief Foundation. Besides being an amazing way to raise money the marathon also is an incredible draw for Outer Banks businesses.

Veterans Day weekend which is historically slow is now packed from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning. All weekend long the island is filled with hungry race goers and their fans. The 3rd year of the marathon appears to be be huge. According to one local source, the race currently has 20% more runners registered than last year.

Outer Banks Beach Driving Update

Now that we are over half the way through the Summer, the impact of the beach driving injunction can truly be felt. Revenues are off on the Outer Banks. Loss of tourist revenue is a major blow to the local economy. Many attribute this to the general state of the US economy. While many attribute this to rising gas prices, this is not what I and many local businesspersons have seen. The areas of the Outer Banks most impacted by loss of revenue, are found in and along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Revenues in Currituck County on the other hand have been up this year.

It would appear their is a direct relationship between the beach driving injunction and loss of revenue along Hatteras Island. Many local groups are gathering to work to repel Judge Terrance Boyle’s injunction. Local politicians like Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr have joined the fight along with Congressman Walter Jones. Some of the local groups working together include: Dare County Commissioners, Outer Banks Preservation Association, local fishing groups, and most town councils. The Outer Banks Association of Realtors has even issued a resolution supporting bills S3113 and HR6223. This issue is becoming a major topic of all Outer Banks conversations.
