Have you always dreamed of owning a holiday home abroad? Jetting off to places like American, Spain or France without the need to worry about where you are going to stay really makes the holiday easier on yourself. Well now, thanks to the current global recession, that dream of yours could become a reality.

As everyone will know, the global recession has affected many places all around the world, making it hard for people to survive. One of the worst hit countries is America and a large number of people living in Europe have no idea. However, with a bit of spare money, you will be able to benefit from the American troubles.

At the moment, from the prices that were seen in 2005, house prices all over America have fallen by up to 60%. Due to the recession, a huge number of people have decided to sell their homes, this has now led to thousands of properties being up for sale.

Due to the fall in prices, plus the better exchange rate for the dollar, this has made buying a second home much more of a reality for many people. Hopefully with a rise in holiday homes being bought by us Brits, it should be having a positive effect on both the US and the UK economies. The reason why I say this is because as more people invest in the American housing market, more people will need overseas property insurance.

Most of the time, Brits buying holiday homes overseas will decide to get their holiday home insurance from companies that are in the UK because it’s easier to set up. This will mean good news for the UK market as more Brits are pumping money into the insurance market. However, I wouldn’t have thought many insurance companies will make alot of holiday cottage insurance sales as although home prices all over the US are down, unlike places like Spain and France, you’ll find it hard to buy a small cottage in the countryside.

More and more people are snapping up cheap property abroad and choosing to have a seconded property which they can enjoy for those long weekends and summer breaks. For younger couples her are finding it increasingly harder to secure a mortgage moving abroad is now a very plausible option. For a lot of people living abroad does have its highlights, you’re going to have a better climate and live for a lot cheaper. Although foreign healthcare is very different depending on the country and also some countries will have very different cultures to what you might be use to or expect, so do your research!

Insurance can be forgot about when people are searching for a new property however it still remains one the most important factors. Insurance for holiday homes is very important because when a property is unoccupied it is a greater insurance risk. Depending on circumstances some property abroad can be left empty for months. Do not put this off you definitely are going to need overseas property insurance, make sorting out insurance a priority and don’t leave it too late because if you rush you risk the chance of choosing the wrong policy. Language can be a big barrier when trying to sort out insurance abroad. Don’t jump in, there will be many insurance companies in your native country so research into which policy is right for you.

Even when looking for a holiday home/cottage in the UK insurance is again very important. Holiday cottage insurance and home insurance sometimes have restrictions remember to read all the terms and conditions and think about exactly what you want to insure, for example weather you want full building and content insurance or both.
